homelessness action week: call for artists

Homelessness Action Week (HAW) is fast approaching and there are many events in the works for October 13-18. The City of Vancouver is planning a number of events, including - Out of the Rain - a major art exhibition, auction, and gala. The City is currently looking for artists to create art umbrellas or donate artwork in any medium for the event.

Out of the Rain

The exhibition will be held at VCC’s downtown campus located at 250 West Pender Street during Homeless Action Week (HAW) which runs October 13 – 19. Artwork by tenants from supportive housing buildings will be showcased alongside art and umbrellas donated by established artists.

Artists recently housed in supportive housing buildings will benefit from the proceeds of the sale of their art, while donations by established artists will be auctioned as a fundraiser for Streetohome. Artists will also be recognized as contributors.

The exhibition will culminate on Friday, October 18 with a lively auction and sale at VCC from 7 to 10 pm. All artists are welcome to attend.

To indicate your interest in donating an artwork or art umbrella, please send an email by September 20 to with the subject title “Artist Donation”.

Although you may submit art until the October 9 deadline, if you let us know in advance of your intent to donate, you will be recognized on the Streetohome website. Include a brief description of the artwork in the body of the email and information on how you may be contacted.

• Works submitted can be in 2-D and 3-D media and must be safe to install and ready to hang.

Submissions are only accepted on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 from 11 am to 1 pm and from 4 to 6 pm.

Please bring all submissions to:
Vancouver Community College (VCC) Downtown Campus
250 West Pender Street, Vancouver (Enter on the corner of Hamilton and Dunsmuir)

• Artists are welcome to leave a single page “About the Artist” sheet that will be put in a book for guests to view at the show and/or a label with your name and media (provide with art submission).

• If you are planning to create a functional umbrella, we recommend using a clear ground before applying acrylics. Finish with a varnish top coat on top of acrylic or enamel paint to prevent peeling.

Stay tuned to the City of Vancouver website for details on other events taking place during Homelessness Action Week:, and we will share the schedule here on the Streetohome blog as soon as it is finalized.

Streetohome is also developing a series that will run on our blog during HAW, telling the stories of people who have received supportive housing and how it has affected their lives. Keep an eye out right here during October.
