Goal 1: Provide permanent stable housing with appropriate support services

When Streetohome launched its 10-Year Plan in 2010, we identified a need for 2,006 new housing units in Vancouver to house those on the streets or at risk of homelessness in Vancouver.

Goal 1In the past year, Streetohome and its partners have been able to provide immediate housing for at least 132 people who are either homeless or at risk of homelessness, and helped support the future development of hundreds more. Streetohome’s focus is permanent housing, combined with the supports necessary – such as mental health, health and addictions support – to keep people safely and stably housed.

Recognizing the lack of low-barrier housing for people who are homeless and the suffering in the streets, Streetohome provided $250,000 towards the renovation costs of the London Hotel, managed by Atira. These renovations have made housing available for 32 people who were homeless or at risk of homelessness, and helped to upgrade laundry facilities, the kitchen and improve fire safety.

In May, Streetohome committed to providing $20 million for more than 900 new units through a partnership with the City of Vancouver and Province of BC. Being built over the next three years on eight sites across Vancouver, these units will give support and housing to youth, women with children, people living with mental health and addictions issues, and people with HIV/AIDS. The first of these projects, at Fir & 7th, is currently under construction and will be ready for occupancy in early 2012.

In partnership with the Mental Health Commission of Canada and with support from Vancouver Foundation, Streetohome committed $1.2 million for At Home/Chez Soi, a national housing research demonstration project to establish the best practices for assisting those who are homeless and living with mental health issues. This funding supported renovations to the Bosman Motor Hotel, now known as the Bosman Hotel Community, where 100 residents began moving in during July 2010. As we continue to support and plan for new projects, we’re excited to work with, and learn from our service provider partners.
